Social Media Plan

For many reasons, it is important to have a social media presence associate with your game. Overall, social media helps you to create a brand around your game, and build awareness of this brand. This is useful for attracting playtesters and building audience for your game. It is also useful for communicating to friends and family about your work, and for building a professional identity. Previous student games that have engaged social well have seen very large audiences for their games: Asterogue has had over 32k downloads, a very large number for a student game.

There are many possible ways to build an audience and engage different kinds of social media. For starters, there are many different social media sites, including Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Twitch, Pinterest, YouTube, Reddit, blog sites, etc.  There are also, game-specific sites such as Gamasutra blogs. There are different ways of engaging each site, and the social media that make the most sense for your game might not make sense for another game.

The goal of this assignment is to develop a plan for how to create a brand around your game and build awareness for it via social media. This takes the form of a document where you address the following questions:

Goal

What are your goals for engaging social media (beyond it being a course requirement). These can be such aspects as building audience, finding playtesters, building fans, or building awareness among indie developers.

Social Media

Which social media platform(s) will you be using? List the social media platform(s), and then provide 1-2 paragraphs on why they are effective platforms for meeting your goals. A game page on Facebook and a Twitter account for the game are a reasonable default, but may not be the best choice for all games. More unusual choices could include Twitch livestreaming, or a Reddit AMA.

Posting plan

What kind of posts will you be making, and how often? Examples of post types include in-progress screenshots, game progress videos, profiles of team members, weekly development blogs, videos of gameplay sessions, postings of concept art for the game. Teams could consider reaching out to friends who have an interesting in journalism to report on their game and team.

The posting plan also needs to who is responsible for each type of post. Social media posts should be tracked as tasks on your scrum board.
